Blue Origin, Jeff Bezos’ aerospace company, has already launched celebrities such as William Shatner and Michael Strahan into space.
Lauren Sánchez, Jeff Bezos’s partner, aspires to go to space next year.
Sánchez, 52, told CNN on Saturday that she hopes to go into orbit sometime in 2023, following in the footsteps of her 58-year-old partner, who first reached space in July 2021.
Sánchez and Bezos, who made their romance public in 2019, will not take off together. Instead, the Emmy Award-winning journalist anticipates joining a female-dominated crew.
“It’ll be a fantastic collection of women,” she told CNN.
Blue Origin, Bezos’ aerospace company, has already launched celebrities like William Shatner and Michael Strahan into space.
In July of last year, after his own 10-minute voyage aboard the New Shepard rocket, Bezos landed safely in Texas and into the arms of Sánchez, who greeted him with an ecstatic welcome back to Earth.
During Saturday’s interview, Bezos also disclosed that he intends to give away a large portion of his present $124 billion fortune, with a primary focus on combating climate change and helping individuals who can help bridge the social and political divide.
The Amazon founder told the news network that he is now “developing the ability to be able to give this money away,” but that the difficult part would be deciding how to spend his fortune “in a levered fashion.”
“It’s not easy,” said the billionaire. “It was not easy to build Amazon. It required a lot of hard effort, a lot of very smart, hard-working people, and I’m discovering — and I believe Lauren is discovering as well — that charity, philanthropy, is quite similar.”
“Both Jeff and Lauren are highly excited by their philanthropic efforts,” a source remarked in June 2021. “When students meet with partners on climate, education, and homelessness work, you can see and hear their joy.”
“There are a lot of ways that I think you might do ineffectual things, too,” Bezos said CNN on announcing his decision to give away his fortune for the first time. “So you have to think about it thoroughly, and you have to put together a team of brilliant individuals.”
Bezos and Sánchez both have children from previous marriages. Bezos has three sons and a daughter with ex-wife MacKenzie Scott, while Sánchez has a son with former NFL player Tony Gonzalez and a son and a daughter with agent Patrick Whitesell.
