Sam Elliott calls first SAG Award win ‘most meaningful acknowledgment of my 55-year career’

Sam Elliott earned his first Screen Actors Guild Award on Sunday, for outstanding male actor in a television movie or limited series.

Evan Peters, who was nominated for his portrayal as Jeffrey Dahmer in Netflix’s drama Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, was beaten out by the seasoned actor.

“What can I say in 45 seconds after just getting the most important recognition from a gathering of my peers in my 55-year career?” Elliott stated as he walked up to the podium to claim his trophy. “Many of them I don’t even know, or simply know as a fan who admires their work. It’s not the time to say goodbye.”

The 78-year-old plays Shea Brennan in Yellowstone’s prequel, 1883. His triumph is the first SAG Award he has gotten in his decades-long career.

“After viewing the work of my fellow candidates, I’m not sure I should be standing up here,” he said during his speech.

Elliott took out a sheet of paper to read from as he took the stage because he “didn’t expect to be up here.”

“I do this because I never expected to be up here. I just have 43 seconds to say this, and I’ve already squandered half of it.”

Elliott has barely received a few honors, despite the fact that his admirers believe him to be one of the finest in the profession. Because his colleagues voted for him, his triumph on Sunday night was his first big honor and the “most important acknowledgment of my 55-year career,” he said.

“”I’m going to appreciate this person, this gal, because it comes from all of you, my SAG-AFTRA brothers and sisters. I’ll keep it as a continual reminder of 1883 and what a blessing it was for everyone on both sides of the camera.”

Elliott praised the cast and crew of 1883, his team, and “my wife, my lovely Katharine, my partner through thick and thin, and the mother of our beautiful daughter” as addition to his fellow actors and actresses.

Congratulations Sam Elliott! This award is well deserved!
